In 2050 woont zeventig procent van de wereldbevolking in de stad. Vooral steden in Afrika, Azië en Latijns-Amerika groeien als nooit tevoren. Wat zijn de culturele en economische hotspots van de toekomst? En wat is de rol van cultuur in het vormen van een inclusieve stad?

Mensen migreren al eeuwen naar de stad. In de hoop op een beter leven, werk, veiligheid of omdat ze een droom willen verwezenlijken. Maar hoe ziet hoop eruit in Kinshasa? Van wat voor toekomst dromen kinderen in Lima? En wat betekent innovatie in Medellín?

In dit programma kijken we samen met journalist en documentairemaker Stephanie Bakker op een vernieuwende manier naar opkomende wereldsteden. In het boek Future Cities, stories behind the statistics of urbanization and growth, richt zij zich niet op de negatieve effecten van urbanisatie, maar op de kracht van de stad. Wat schuilt er in het DNA van de stad en haar bewoners? Hoe komt dat? En hoe helpt dat de stad vooruit?

Een visuele en verhalende reis, die van de ontluikende mode-industrie in Kinshasa en een nachtclub met een sociaal doel in Addis Ababa leidt naar Rotterdam. Wat is de ziel van deze stad? En welke rol speelt cultuur in het vormen van een inclusieve stad waar ruimte is voor authenticiteit en eigenheid? Hierover gaat moderator Stephanie Afrifa in een gesprek met Romy Zhang van het jongerenplatform Notes en Malique Mohamud, oprichter van Concrete Blossom. Samen met twee andere twee andere Rotterdamse hiphoppartijen stelden zij de tentoonstelling The World is Yours! – hiphop maakt de stad – samen voor het Wereldmuseum.
